The 2026 North Queensland Games will officially kick off with a spectacular Opening Ceremony, bringing the community together for a vibrant celebration of sport, culture and regional pride.
Held on Friday 1 May at Harrup Park, Mackay, the free, family-friendly event will transform the venue into a hub of activity, welcoming thousands of locals, athletes and visitors from across the region.
The Opening Ceremony will feature a dynamic program of entertainment and experiences, including community stalls, food trucks, amusements and interactive activities for all ages.
A highlight of the evening will be the traditional March of Athletes, where clubs and competitors from across North Queensland will come together in a powerful display of unity and regional spirit.
The ceremony will also include the official lighting of the Games torch, marking the beginning of the 2026 Games, followed by a spectacular fireworks display and some live entertainment to close out the night.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and engage with elite athletes and Olympians, with exclusive opportunities for photos, autographs and merchandise signings including 2026 Games Ambassador Boxing World Champion Liam Paro.

“I’m proud to be from Mackay and even prouder to be leading the torch in 2026. Regional clubs are where it all starts, and I’m passionate about shining a light on the talent we have here. If I can inspire even one young athlete to dream bigger and take that step onto the world stage, then that’s what it’s all about.”
The event will also showcase key sporting highlights featured across the Games, including the highly anticipated Channel 7 100m Sprint Invitational Cup with a purse of $2500, along with competitions in cricket and woodchopping, celebrating both traditional and emerging sports across the region.
The North Queensland Games is the largest multi-sport event in regional Australia, attracting thousands of participants of all ages and abilities.

The Opening Ceremony is free and open to the public, with everyone encouraged to come along, soak up the atmosphere and be part of this iconic regional event.
