Family Affair on Wheels: Parents and Children Share the North Queensland Games Experience
Posted: 16/06/2026
One of the most heartwarming stories to emerge from the skateboarding competition at the North Queensland Games was seeing parents and children competing alongside one another at the Sugarbowl.
For Jay McCaskill and his family, the event was about much more than medals and results; it was about sharing an experience together and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
“It was great. We all loved it and we’re already excited for the next Games,” Jay said.
While many sporting events separate competitors by age or category, the North Queensland Games provided a unique opportunity for families to participate in the same event and support each other throughout the day.
Jay said competing alongside his children wasn’t a new experience for their family, but it remains something they cherish every time they get the chance.
“We have competed together before and it’s always great. We’ve all achieved a lot through skating together.”
When asked about his favourite moment from the event, Jay didn’t hesitate.
“All of us got a medal. Even Skylah was so stoked to get her medal for taking part. There was no first, second or third for her category, but she was still so happy and proud.”
The sense of achievement, participation and family connection was a highlight not just for competitors, but for spectators watching from the sidelines.
Jay believes the North Queensland Games is an event that more families should experience together.
“One hundred percent I’d recommend it. We’ll be letting everyone know about it and sharing information about the next one. We’d love to see it get even bigger next time.”
The North Queensland Games continues to provide opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities to compete, connect and celebrate sport together. For families like the McCaskills, it’s a chance to share a passion, support one another and create special moments both on and off the skateboard.
